Animal Shelters & Pet Shelters
The Animal Welfare League of South Australia operates pet and animal shelters for lost and abandoned animals, located at Wingfield.
We exist to provide care to the many lost and abandoned companion animals in South Australia.
Opened in 1976 by former Premier of South Australia, Don Dunstan, our Wingfield animal shelters comprise of 17 rows of kennels which can accomodate for up to 300 animals at any time, making it the largest animal shelter in South Australia.
The Wingfield complex was designed to provide the best of support to the many needy animals in South Australia and to help the community to understand its obligations in relation to responsible pet ownership.
Our Northern Annexe, located in Elizabeth West, was opened in 2005. The 'NAX', was developed in partnership with the City of Playford to provide support for the welfare and care of lost and stray animals in the northern suburbs and adjacent rural areas.
Both of our animal and pet shelters also contain specialised nursery rooms, which care for very young kittens and puppies, until they are old enough to go to their new homes. These nurseries are invaluable each kitten season when the AWL is overwhelmed with stray kittens.
The Staff and Volunteers at the AWL work tirelessly each day to return many mistreated animals back to good health, so that they can have a second chance at finding love.
Last year our animal shelters housed and cared for over 20,000 animals. Unfortunately this is a number that continues to grow, and the AWL will continue on its journey to a world full of responsible pet owners. Our animal shelters are located at 1-19 Cormack Rd, Wingfield and 4 Hewittson Rd, Elizabeth West. Contact the Wingfield shelter on 8348 1300, Elizabeth West, 8256 0000.
Adoptions of animals are from our Wingfield site only.
